More than just an archive.
This project was born out of love for old computers and fascination with the era when every line of code meant a discovery. It serves as a digital memory for the generation that grew up on 8-bit computers, preserving not only the content but also the context of the time when the first home computers were born.
Technology under the hood
Intelligent Indexing
We are not just a PDF viewer. Every article is indexed and linked to an entity database. This allows us to know that "Bill Gates" in 1974 is related to "Altair BASIC". This relational approach enables discovering connections across the entire archive.
Laravel & Livewire
The application runs on the modern Laravel framework. We use Livewire (Volt) for dynamic filtering and instant interactivity. The result is an experience similar to a Single Page Application, but with the benefits of a classic web site.
Tailwind CSS
The visual style combines modern cleanliness with retro elements. Tailwind CSS allowed us to create a responsive interface that honors the typography and layout of period magazines, whether you read on desktop or mobile.
Dynamic Connections
Article texts are analyzed and automatically supplemented with "Smart Links". If you come across a name of a computer or personality in the text, you can jump to related content in the archive with one click.
What are we planning next?
Our work is just beginning. We plan to add more titles like Byte or Compute!, expand the index by thousands more entries, and introduce full-text search in the content of scanned pages.
